Tower History

A brief summary by P.G. Hunter (Secretary Tower Lodge)

The formation of Tower Lodge was proposed at a meeting of Elevation Lodge 4185 on  11th November 1952. After much debate a petition was presented by the founding members  at a meeting of Elevation Lodge on 3rd June 1953, A successful ballot was taken and the  petition was signed agreeing to the formation of Tower Lodge 7292. The new "Tower Lodge"  was consecrated in the Masonic Temple, Scott Street, Stanley, County Durham on Saturday  19th September 1953 and became the 160th lodge in the Province of Durham.

There are today 200+ lodges.

The name Tower was taken from a local landmark known as Greencroft Tower, which was  the eastern approach gateway to Greencroft Hall. The tower was demolished on the 6th  April 1955 due to its unsafe condition. Our first meeting place was the Masonic Hall,  Kyo Laws, Annfield Plain. In 1989 we moved to our present home, The Masonic Hall, Scott  Street, Stanley.

There have been 276 Members since 1954 representing, professional footballers, miners,  business men, policemen, tradesmen, indeed from all walks of life, as Freemasonry is  universal and there are no employment requisites. New members are the lifeblood of any  organisation, Freemasonry is no different. New members are always welcome (See "Join Us"  page for details of how to apply for membership) if you are interested, we will be  pleased to meet and talk with you.
